Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese archipelago, is an island with a dual personality, traditional and modern, is packed with history where retrace the ancient glories of ancient Greece visiting priceless archaeological sites. According to an ancient legend, Rhodes was the island chosen by the God of the Sun, Apollo, like home and this is probably the reason why the Greek island you will find at least 300 sunny days a year.

The tracks of a mythical past, here, are very tangible: in the ancient archaeological ruins, heirs of the glory of Kamiros, Lindos and Ialyssos, the city-state of Rhodes. In the beautiful setting and in other legacies of the long rule of the Knights of St. John. The famous district of the Knights, the medieval site of rare beauty, is the most fascinating part of the Old Town, the Mandraki harbor separates from the new town.

Rhodes is an essential point of reference for the sea and beyond. Jagged rocks and breathtaking waters frame the beaches of Rhodes, long and sandy but also wild and repaired in any case perfect for snorkeling. The island has a natural heritage of the most fascinating archipelago: one of its symbols is the Butterfly Valley, animated nature park, between July and August, by the beating of millions of wings that flutter gracefully among waterfalls and streams.

What to see & what to do

Beaches

Agathi Golden Beach

The second largest beach, and according to some the first for beauty, is Agathi beach, further south, towards Lindos. It is a strip of very fine, golden sand, hence the name of Golden Beach. Here too there are umbrellas and deck chairs with a bar behind them where you can also have lunch. The beach is bordered by rocks which to the north are dotted with caves

Antony Quinn Bay

Actually it's called Faliraki, it is the most photographed beach in Rhodes and one of the best ever sea in Greece. It is a cove set among the rocks where the water is particularly crystalline by virtue of the stones seabed. If you prefer sand to rock, go to Tsampika. Faliraki beach is about 20 minutes drive from Rhodes.

Prassonissi

Two creeks come together in a sand isthmus at low tide becomes a real sandy beach leading to a barren island. In July and August, the Meltemi blows aggressive on Prassonissi beach and becomes a great opportunity to get on the windsurf sail or kite surfing and engage in water sports. Compared to Rhodes it is at the opposite point of the island, almost two hours of transfer. If you are in the area you can pay a visit to this wonderful beach.

Park & Landmarks

Kallithea Spa

The spa Kallithéa, recently renovated with European Union financial contribution, are another Italian island architectural footprint testimony. In fact, they were known for thousands of years, were Italians at enhancing tourist these spas that are located about ten kilometers from Rhodes town. The complex houses Kallithéa all year round festivals, cultural events, business meetings and receptions. In summer, it also works as a bathhouse allowing access to the beach nearby.

Mandraki's Port

Mandraki is not only the marina where cruise ships, yachts and sailing boats which visit the island but it is also one of the busiest areas of Rhodes. rental activities, souvenir shops, bars, restaurants, the market and the tourist office are all close to this area, which leads to the old city through the famous Gate of Freedom, one of the nine city gates that allow entry into the medieval part. But the main attraction of the port are the two pillars at the entrance of the sea. The columns are home on their top two bronze statues depicting Elafos and Elafina, the deer that according to ancient legend would have chased the snakes infesting the island. Just between the two columns is said that he stopped imposing the Colossus of Rhodes, gigantic statue of Elios God, protector of the island and now unfortunately it's gone, destroyed by an earthquake.

Family

Rhodes Water Park

The Water Park of Rhodes, the Faliraki area a few kilometers from the cruise port, is one of the most fun attractions for children, teenagers and even adults. It is a great amusement park water like an amphitheater overlooking the bay of Faliraki. The park has a huge number of attractions, mainly water slides, which will heighten the adrenaline of those who make them and those who remain to wade. Attractions for both adults and children. In the lower part of the park are two unique attractions for the little ones, with fountains, custom slides, statues and fountains. Suitable to children are also many other areas of the park such as the Crazy River and the wave pool.

History & Culture

Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

The first, and perhaps most important attraction of the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, is the palace itself in which the various rooms have been set up. We are talking about the hospital built in the 15th century by the Knights of the Order of St. John who reigned on the island. The palace has a large internal courtyard where you can admire a beautiful majolica floor from Karpathos. Inside, however, a part of the museum houses tombstones, coats of arms and other finds relating to the domination of the Knights, while the other part is dedicated to the ceramic finds of the Rhodian school, among which the statue of the "Aphrodite taking a bath "

Ialyssos

Another fairly populated urban center is Ialyssos which is just over 10 kilometers from Rhodes. The popularity of Ialyssos is mainly due to the presence of Mount Filerimos, small hill of 267 meters reached by car or on foot. The ease of the route makes it easy to walk up to the viewpoint where a large cross stands out. Under the cross stands an ancient Byzantine monastery. Opposite the monastery are the remains of the ancient acropolis of Ialyssos.

Lindos's Acropolys

Lindos is a small village located about an hour's drive from the center of Rhodes. The village is made up of white houses as in the best tradition of Mediterranean architecture. In itself it would not be anything special if it were not for the acropolis which is located in the immediate vicinity. The acropolis is located about 116 meters above sea level and the path to reach it is a bit difficult but it is absolutely worth it. One of the most fascinating attractions is the temple of Athena Lindia from the sixth century BC. The bas-relief at the foot of the acropolis is also beautiful.

The Grand Master's Palace

The Grand Master's Palace was the fortress of the Knights of San Giovanni. In the two centuries in which they reigned over Rhodes, the island became the outpost of Christianity in the fight against the Islamic world. It was therefore a headquarters that if necessary could have housed the population, if for example it had been under attack. On either side of the entrance door two imposing twin towers. After the defeat with Suleiman the Magnificent, the Knights were expelled from the island and the structure became a prison. Around the middle of the 19th century, a powerful explosion destroyed a large part of the building and the reconstruction had to wait until the 1930s when the Italians had the mandate to modify the fortress in the residence of Vittorio Emanuele II and Benito Mussolini.

The Old City

Unlike other Greek places, the city of Rhodes is not only famous for its classical remains but also for its medieval ones. The credit goes to the Knights of St. John who inhabited the island from 1309 to 1522, when they were forced to take refuge in Malta, defeated by the Ottoman militias of Suleiman the Magnificent. In over two centuries of stay, this transnational knightly order built a beautiful city within mighty walls divided between a residential area, where the fortress was and still is today, and an area dedicated to trade inhabited by Greeks, Turks and Jews. In short, the Old Town of Rhodes, under UNESCO protection for thirty years, is the inevitable starting point for discovering the beauties of the island, many of which, among other things, are located within the same walls. .

Opposite the monastery are the remains of the ancient acropolis of Ialyssos.

Nea Agorà

The Nea Agorà is the modern part of the capital. Modern Rhodes stages a parade of buildings facing the sea: the grandeur and the strict lines visually recall the period of Italian sovereignty over the island. The first thing you notice here is a very animated: the Nea Agora beating heart is represented by Mercato Nuovo, once a market of fish, today a lively crowded bazaar of shops and restaurants. Shaded by domes and terraces, the pedestrianized center is the right place to buy a souvenir, but also for some authentic goodness of place. Architecturally, one of the most representative buildings of Nea Agora there are the City Hall, the Post Office building and the Annunciation Cathedral with its square bell tower.

The Street of the Knights

Located in the heart of Old Town, the steep cobbled street is lined by houses that offered shelter to pilgrims. Walking along, they come upon large palaces marked by the architectural style and the coats of arms of various nations - or rather languages - that made the order. The Street of the Knights develops between the Hospital of the Knights - now houses the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes - and the Palace of the Grand Master. A unique place in the world that delivers a new dimension.

And just like that, another TUI season is over. My second time working on Rhodes with many great adventures, an awesome team, so many amazing memories and new friends, that made it so hard to say goodbye to all of this. However, I am so grateful this season could take place after all, and all the challenges and circumstances this year made it definitely not easy but taught me so much in life.
.
I want to thank everyone who was part of this adventure, but especially a big thanks to the people I spent most time with - my amazing teammates schmitzkoo luukas.doe viviensr22 oezgeoez__ lena_h1999 for all the support, the great laughter at work or in our free time and for being my little second family. Also to my dear friend franziskaleder, I’m so happy we got placed on the same island, thank you for all the fun days off together. Hope to see you all again soon, stay safe and keep smiling 🧿
