Piraeus is a municipality located 8 kilometers southeast of Athens. For the growth of both urban centers, it could be said that Piraeus is the port of Athens. It is undoubtedly the most important port in all of Greece, also because it connects with all the islands of the Aegean Sea as well as a stopover for cruise ships to visit the wonders of Athens. The port is divided into three natural bays: Kantharos is the main port that hosts cruise and commercial ships, Zea is the marina that allows the mooring of large private yachts while Mikrolimano is always a tourist port but smaller where there are small fishing boats. The Kantharos area has no tourist interest, Zea has a beautiful promenade where you can find high-level shops and restaurants, Mikrolimani is popular mainly for the abundance of taverns where you can eat excellent fresh fish. Piraeus assumed importance in the fifth century BC when Themistocles decided to fortify it to make it as unassailable as possible. Today it is one of the most important ports in Europe, above all thanks to its position that allows trade with Asia. The Archaeological Museum is certainly noteworthy.

What to see & what to do

Beaches

Yabanaki Beach

Thanks to a short transfer, about 35 minutes, from the cruise port it is possible to make an excursion to the seaside resort of Varkiza and Yabanaki beach. Here you will find the usual beach facilities and it is possible to take part in various water activities. It is also possible to go to some typical taverns to eat something and have a good drink.

Park & Landmarks

Corinth Canal

Approximately 1.5 hours transfer from the port of Piraeus you can visit the wonderful Corinth Canal which separates mainland Greece from the Peloponnese peninsula. A spectacle of nature, completely excavated down to sea level. Once off the bus, it will be possible to board a small boat to cross the canal and live an unforgettable experience.

Lycabettus

Not too far from Syntagma Square, in the residential district of Kolonaki, you can take a comfortable funicular to visit the Lycabettus hill which with its 270 meters above sea level is the highest panoramic point of the city. On the top there is a chapel dedicated to St. George, a theater and a restaurant. The view over the city from here is truly wonderful and if possible it is better to choose the hours of sunset to see even more suggestive views.

History & Culture

Agorà

Just below the Acropolis is the Agora, the political, administrative and social heart of Athens. The place where the fate of cities and nations was decided for millennia, also famous for the death sentence of Socrates. What we can visit today is thanks to the reatauro works begun at the beginning of the 30s that have brought it back to its ancient beauty.

Archaeological Museum of Athens

The Archaeological Museum of Athens, the largest museum in all of Greece, is undoubtedly one of the main attractions for those who land on the shores of Piraeus. Inside we can find finds ranging from the Mycenaean to the Roman period, thanks to years of excavations conducted throughout the national territory. Sculptures, vases and statues are only part of what can be admired in this structure.

Athens

Athens is a must for anyone stopping by cruise ship in Piraeus. In the past the two municipalities were separate but with time and the exponential growth of the urban fabric it is almost as if they were one even if each one has maintained its identity. Fascinating and mysterious Athens has been the hub of literature, art and philosophy for centuries. At every corner you can breathe the history of which Athens is the main protagonist. Even for the less accustomed to history, Athens today is a city that has modernized and is always one of the first choices among all the European capitals to visit.

Athens Acropolis

The first place that deserves your attention in Athens is certainly the Acropolis overlooking the surrounding valley from a rock. The Acropolis with its beautiful monuments is the universal symbol of civilization and the classical spirit and immediately plunge you into an atmosphere of charm and full of mystery. The Acropolis is the greatest architectural and artistic complex left from Greek civilization to the whole world: a rocky hill where fortunes are important philosophical thoughts and ambitious political strategies. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, the Acropolis is located in a raised position with respect to the center of Athens, about 150 meters above sea level. In addition to visiting the archaeological site, it is possible to visit the Acropolis Museum and if you want to stop at the adjoining restaurant to recover energy.

Monastiraki

Not far from Plaka we find a place that can be defined as the popular soul of Athens, the neighborhood of Monastiraki. This is where the famous flea market is staged especially at the weekend when a myriad of stalls invade the streets where the shops are closed to allow this. All kinds of goods are sold and even if the quality is not excellent it is certainly a very picturesque place to visit. In addition to the possibility of shopping, you have the opportunity to visit the small and large cathedral of Athens and also the Tzistarakis Mosque, symbol of the centuries-old Ottoman domination of Athens and of all Greece.

Plaka District

Plaka is one of the oldest and most charming neighborhoods in the city. Near the Acropolis and Syntagma Square it is the place of the city where most of the Athenian social life is concentrated. Almost completely pedestrianized, it is the perfect neighborhood to stroll around in search of shops where to shop and restaurants to eat some succulent creca specialties. It is also possible to visit some of the most important monuments of the city such as the churches of San Nicola Rangabas and San Nicodemo, beautiful examples of Byzantine architecture, and the Museum of Greek Folk Art, which houses objects of common use and period clothing.

Syntagma Square

Syntagma Square, what the Agora was for ancient Athens, it is today for modern Athens. The main square of the city where we can find the Parliament Building and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded by the Evzones, the Greek guards who every day allow you to witness the magnificent changing of the guard.

Terminal

The port of Piraeus was initially called “Porto Leone”, from the large marble statue of the lion that stood in front of the port. The statue was stolen during the Middle Ages and moved to Venice, Italy. The cruise port is located on the Saronic Gulf (part of the Aegean Sea) and was initially used as a terminus for passenger ferries connecting the larger Greek islands. The port’s main terminals for cruise ships are Terminal A and Terminal B. Their berths are located on the southern docks. Most of the visiting liners are deployed seasonally in the Eastern Mediterranean and brought home to Greece or Italy.

Remind

Transport

Once off the ship, directly in the port there is the possibility to choose between public transport or taxi to reach the center of Athens. Once in the historic center the best way to get around the city is on foot, the distances are quite small, alternatively the subway and the bus network are valid alternatives.
