Mykonos is a small island of the Cyclades archipelago located in the Aegean Sea. Known by all as the island of unbridled fun since the 80s, over time it has been able to transform itself from a somewhat hippy island into a glamorous and cosmopolitan destination. Certainly its “Mediterranean character” is there for all to see thanks to its white houses, colored windows, balconies always full of flowers and narrow streets. Over the decades, a large number of designer hotels and exclusive pool villas have been built that continually end up in architecture magazines. The naturalistic beauties such as the sea and its territory have contributed abundantly to its growth in tourism and for this reason to live it calmly and be able to visit it carefully the best periods are those before and after the very high season such as May, June, September and October. In these months its most authentic and rare beauty side comes out even more without the musical background that pervades it in the long summer months.

What to see & what to do

Beaches

Agrari Beach

Beautiful sea and crystal clear water also thanks to the rocky bottoms that invite you to use rock shoes to avoid having small accidents. In the waters of Agrari Beach, a true paradise given the total absence of the tourist mass of many other beaches. Perfect place especially for families.

Paradise Beach Mykonos

Paradise Beach is one of the most popular and popular beaches in Mykonos. Crystal clear sea, colorful fish and an expanse of golden sand. In the late afternoon it becomes an open-air disco and that is why it is also the most popular with young people who come here specifically for beach parties. In the less crowded periods it is an excellent site for snorkeling.

Paraga Beach

Paraga beach is about 300 meters long and 30 meters wide. One part is completely free while the other is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas. Particularly suitable for families and for those who want to practice water sports, including snorkeling. Nearby is a small but quaint market to visit once you get tired of being on the beach.

Platys Gialos Beach

Platys Gialos beach is popular, both for the beauty that distinguishes it, both for the equipment it is equipped with and because it is one of the least windy beaches on the island. It is possible to practice various water sports. Fine sand and crystal clear sea, this is also a beach suitable for families.

Park & Landmarks

Ano Mera

Ano Mera is a small village about 8 km from the center of Mykonos. A real gem given that at such a short distance there is a decidedly staid air compared to the frenzy of Mykonos. Here too there are hotels and residences but the atmosphere is completely different. There are also many things to see, from the main square to the monastery of Panagia Tourliani right in the center of the village. Also there is a beautiful bell tower and a marble fountain that are worth the visit. Reachable by public transport directly from the old port.

Armenistis Lighthouse

One of the best viewpoints on the island of Mykonos is undoubtedly the Armenistis Lighthouse. The road to get there is quite bumpy, the structure almost in ruins but both the lighthouse and the view offer truly intense emotions. In Mykonos the old and the new combine with great skill.

Little Venice

Little Venice is one of the landmarks of Mykonos. The architecture is typical, Mediterranean, which characterizes the whole island with the difference, however, that the first row of houses "floats" on the water just like in Venice. In these streets are concentrated the largest number of restaurants, taverns and shops to buy souvenirs and handicrafts. Walking here is really recommended, especially in the evening, at sunset.

The Windmills

The windmills are one of the most fascinating attractions in Mykonos. Built in the sixteenth century for about 400 years they have been a vital source of the island's economic sustenance both internally and by creating trade routes for the export of flour. With the advent of mass tourism they were promptly converted into an attraction thanks to a major renovation and now they are one of the most important photographic destinations on the island. Furthermore, one of the mills has been transformed into a museum with photos and captions in English and Greek to tell the history and commercial importance of this activity fueled by strong winds. They are located in Kato Myli, reachable both on foot from the historic center and by public transport.

History & Culture

Delo Island

The island of Delos is a true pearl of the Clicladi, completely uninhabited but it has an extraordinary open-air museum. The archaeological site of Delos, the cradle of Apollo and Artemis, respectively God of the Sun and Goddess of the Moon. The excavation operations have continued unabated since the end of the nineteenth century and have brought to light finds that are also kept in the archaeological museum of Mykonos. It is possible to visit it thanks to ferry transfers lasting 45 minutes directly from the port of Mykonos.

Panagia Paraportinai

The most famous and oldest church in Mykonos. Located in the Kastro district, it is easily reachable on foot from the city center. The complex consists of five churches built between 1475 and 1600, in the typical Cycladic architecture, completely in white lime. Four churches served as the basis of the fifth that overlooks them and a beautiful dome completes the construction. A work of art that indelibly affects anyone who visits it at any time of the day but especially at night when the moon enhances the whiteness of the white walls.

Walking

Historic Center of Mykonos

Chora is the name by which the historic center of Mykonos is identified. The narrow streets that overlap reserve surprises and through them is a special experience that leaves a sense of sweet contentment. The houses with their colors characterize the heart of this most ancient and rich history. You will be fascinated by the suggestion of the sunset when the waves are tinged with golden light and crashing on the promenade and the blue sky turns yellow and then red. In the historic center, the most famous street is Matoyianni Street, the shopping and nightlife street of Mykonos. Along the way, shops of all kinds: from high fashion, to pret a porter, to merchandising and more or less ethnic clubs. Fortunately, Matoyianni street, even if flooded with tourists every year, manages to keep the fundamental Greek urban characteristics alive, in fact, walking along its branches, white houses and colored windows appear a bit everywhere.

happy thursday 🦋

Habt einen schönen Abend meine Lieben.🥰

Good to know

  1. Clothing Casual summer wear can be worn during the day any time of the year; but be sure to bring a jacket or sweater for cooler evenings from December to March.
  2. Water Shoes Bring them if you go to swim or snorkel. Some of the water can be rocky after you walk from the beach.
  3. Sundries For convenience and cost concerns, bring your own everyday health and beauty products with you.
  4. Port Regulation Be aware that often in port it's forbidden to take off the ship fruits, vegetables and unsealed food items for local agricolture concern.
  5. Currency The official currency is the Euros.
  6. Credit Card concern
  7. Time Zone

Terminal

Ferries and cruise ships to the island of Mykonos in Mykonos Town Moor – the ferry port on the west coast. The Mykonos Cruise Ship Terminal is located in Tourlos. It is close to Agios Stefanos beach. The distance from Mykonos Town is 3.5 km. There are shuttle buses to the city center. You can also take a taxi from the taxi rank on the Mykonos seafront. The walking distance is about half an hour. The Mykonos Cruise Port Pier in Tourlos only serves smaller cruise ships. Larger ships anchor in the bay and passengers are brought ashore by boats. The Mykonos Port Tender Pier is located in the Old Port. It is within walking distance of the city center.

Remind

Transport

The fact that Mykonos is not a particularly large island makes it absolutely convenient to rent a scooter to visit it in peace. Even the car is an excellent vehicle as long as it is not visited in the highest season when the island traffic is at its peak. Good bus network with frequent daily connections to reach any point of the island. Maximum distance of one ride is about half an hour.
