Marseille is the oldest city in France, founded by the Greeks in 600 BC Historically, its privileged location on the Mediterranean makes it a crossroads of peoples, where influences of cultures far removed they always manage to meet. Arriving in Marseille comes across a delightful chaos and, at the same time, very characteristic: the traffic, the fishmongers, everything of this city suggests a rich framework to be observed where the details are many, colorful and cheerful.

With the nomination as Capital of Culture 2013, the Provençal town has embarked on a redevelopment project, especially the port, which has given new luster and more order in neighborhoods that had been abandoned for decades.

Arriving in Marseille prepares to stunning views and the food sublime that awaits him, and it is no coincidence. The city is synonymous with his iconic fish soup, bouillabaisse, typically prepared with redfish, sea gurnard, John Dory, conger eel, gurnard, weever, sauces and vegetables. Another typical entry of traditional restaurants is that of the Marseillaise mussels, served with tomato, to try at least once in their lifetime.

What to see & what to do

Park & Landmarks

Cassis

Cassis is another small pearl which is about 20km away from Marseille. A small village of 8000 souls that has remained unchanged over time, a place where calm and tranquility are sought and which makes it appreciated precisely for this. The old town of Cassis comes with pretty colored houses in soft pastel shades and small roads linking the old harbor area with top of the village. The old harbor area is perhaps the most striking of the city, where you can see up close small colorful boats of local fishermen and watch how hot summer day life of the bay takes place lazily at night near the release into the sea.

Valensole

Valensole is an absolutely unmissable stop to admire the flowering of lavender if clearly you are visiting it at the right time, that is, from the beginning of June to the end of August. The scent of lavender spreads in the air, intense and delicate. The plateau of Valensole or Plateau de Valensole is located south of the department of Alpes de Haute Provence at 500 meters above sea level.

History & Culture

Aigues-Mortes

The distance of this fortified town is quite important, 90km from the port of Marseille, but the visit is really worth a long transfer. The salt smell welcomes tourists already many kilometers away from the town. You feel in the air and is the same for centuries, just like the city, it remained intact just as the king had wanted. Aigues-Mortes is formed by 5 vertical roads that intersect with other 5 horizontal, in a perfect symmetry. Where lived the salt workers and sailors, today there are craft shops, bars, restaurants and souvenir shops. Although very touristy, the Aigues-Mortes charm is undeniable.

Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence is a town that is only about twenty minutes from the port of Marseille, so a visit is highly recommended. The town is divided between the Old Town and the one considered more modern by Corso Mirabeau, a beautiful tree-lined avenue. In Vieil Aix stand out the Cathedral of San Salvatore, Hotel de la Ville with the Clock Tower and a maze of narrow streets that open into squares or markets or characterized by amazing fountains. Sicuramenta to see is a statue dedicated to the painter Cezanne, perfect place for their photo taken with the artist playing.

Arles

Located about an hour's drive from the port of Marseille, the town of Arles is the gateway to the Camargue region. Its colors and scents as well as its panoramas and memorable views also inspired the famous painter Van Gogh who chose it to spend the last years of his life. The Amphitheater, the Roman Theater, the church of St-Trophime are just some examples of the beauty of this small town that is definitely worth a visit.

Chateau d'If

Chateau d'If is a small island accessible via a short boat transfer and will make you savor the unique experience of going back in time, in a sixteenth century French fortress that has become a maximum security prison and which inspired The Count of Montecristo by Alexander Dumas

Saint-Laurent Church

Saint-Laurent is possibly the oldest Christian worship of Marseille, and has survived to this day thanks to some restoration over the centuries. Archaeologists are of the opinion that the Church of San Lorenzo is built on the exact spot where the first Greek settlements took place. At the foot of the hill where the Church, in fact, was discovered an archaic Ionic capitals, probably belonged to the sanctuary of Apollo Delphinios. The location of San Lorenzo offers a magnificent view of the Vieux Port, with its old and new buildings, and an amazing view of the blue sea.

Vieux Port

The Marseille's Vieux Port area is inhabited by about 2600 years. It is without doubt the heart of the city. Vieux Port is home to sailboats, fishing, bars, theaters and, in general, is one of the most colorful and authentic neighborhoods of France. Take a tour of the Quai des Belges, the area where fishermen dock in Marseille and unload fresh fish early in the morning, and where of course you can leave for excursions into the sea. The Quai can be reached from La Canebière broad boulevard from the port through the whole city and provides a comprehensive overview of the city enough. Among the attractions of Vieux Port is also the ferry that makes the tour of the harbor, from Fort Nicolas and Fort Saint Jean. The fort St-Jean was built after the looting by the Aragonese in 1423, for defense of the port; Saint-Nicolas was instead erected later, in 1660, with the aim of controlling the population. The two forts were joined by a beautiful bridge, but was destroyed during the Second World War. St-Jean was one of the focal points of the French revolution.

Good to know

  1. Clothing Casual summer wear can be worn during the day any time of the year; but be sure to bring a jacket or sweater for cooler evenings from December to March.
  2. Water Shoes Bring them if you go to swim or snorkel. Some of the water can be rocky after you walk from the beach.
  3. Sundries For convenience and cost concerns, bring your own everyday health and beauty products with you.
  4. Port Regulation Be aware that often in port it's forbidden to take off the ship fruits, vegetables and unsealed food items for local agricolture concern.
  5. Currency The official currency is the Mexican Peso, but the U.S. dollar is widely accepted throughout the island.
  6. Credit Card concern Pay attention using credit cards in Cozumel. Here several episodes of cloning happened. Use cash as much as possible.
  7. Time Zone EST (Eastern Standard Time) UTC/GMT -5 hours. No DST changes during the year. Make sure to keep the ship's time on your clock to come back board on time. Be aware of automatic changes of your smartphones.

Terminal

The cruise port of Marseille has terminals located in two different areas of the port. Small and medium sized ships use the moorings of the Joliette Terminal. They are close to the city center. The Marseille Provence cruise center serves most of the cruise ships that dock in Marseille. The terminals are located about 10 km from the historic city center. This terminal has a large capacity building and is the boarding point for all roundtrip ship departures. A bus and shuttle service, as well as taxis, allow passengers to reach the city center.

Remind

Transport

Marseille has an active and very functional network of public services. It is a big city, but it is possible to discover every corner of its historic center on foot. For the more distant attractions, the public service is excellent, with metro, bus and tram, all accessible with the same ticket.
