Livorno, an ancient maritime city, was born as we know it today around 1600 by the will of the Medici who became a welcoming landing place for all the persecuted of that time: religious, political and racial. This amalgam of cultures that pervaded it has made it what today is an open and tolerant city.

Rich in history in its streets, bridges and ancient buildings that have earned it the nickname of “little Venice”. What is certain is that the Tuscan city has nothing to envy to anyone, neither in the cultural nor in the naturalistic one. Tuscany is renowned all over the world for the beauty of its lands and the sea that bathes it. Works of art in the open air scattered in a territory that from the largest city to the smallest village in the countryside can make you discover timeless wonders.

Precisely for this reason Livorno is the gateway to visit places of inestimable value such as Florence, the cradle of the Italian Renaissance, Pisa with its squares and the world famous Leaning Tower. Livorno, as a starting point is also perfect for visiting a part of nearby Liguria, the Cinque Terre, another Italian wonder.

Park & Landmarks

Cinque Terre National Park

Not many percisamente to know the names of the small towns that are part of this unique area but definitely came the echo of what they represent. Nestled like little jewels in the beautiful coastline of the Italian Riviera, they have been declared World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Portovenere is the first stop, a beautiful seaside village beautifully set in natural surroundings. Reachable both on foot and by public transport directly from the historic center.

History & Culture

Basilica di Santa Croce a Firenze

The tomb of Michelangelo, "protected" by three sculptures of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, contends the first part of the Santa Croce Basilica with the tomb of Galileo Galilei, located just opposite. Immediately after Michelangelo is the cenotaph of Dante but his remains, let in Ravenna where he died in exile. In the bottom of the basilica there are the chapels frescoes by Giotto with the Stories of the Life of St. Francis. In the Pazzi Chapel, where Giuliano de Medici was killed and Lorenzo the Magnificent wounded during the famous conspiracy, it is preserved the Crucifix by Cimabue.

Chiesa di Santa Maria Novella a Firenze

Around the end of 1200 the Dominican friars began the construction of the Church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, which later became a fantastic example of "Tuscan Romanesque" thanks also to the use of marble in different colors. Inside, Giotto's Crucifix attracts attention as you walk through the three naves that make up the church. The various chapels inside preserve works of historical importance as well as artifacts and sculptures of inestimable value. The most important work is undoubtedly the Trinity by Masaccio, a marvel of technique and ingenuity even just for the workmanship.

Duomo di Firenze Battistero e Torre di Giotto

The Brunelleschi's Dome overlooking Florence and still there is no across the city's tallest building. The bell tower was designed by Giotto although did not see him over. The Baptistery is one of the oldest buildings in Florence and is there in the fourth century; with its magnificent gates is a true Bible in images. The Cathedral with its facade in white and green marble look. There is nowhere else in the world a complex of buildings so extraordinary. We are in the heart of Florence, opposite Santa Maria del Fiore, which everyone calls Duomo. A cathedral of 153 meters long, built in almost 170 years. Each tour of Florence starts from here: with their heads up and look in amazement, wondering how they made men create such a wonder.

Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta a Pisa

The Cathedral of Pisa is a tangible evidence of the prestige that the Maritime Republic reached the moment of its greatest splendor. Its construction began in 1064, coinciding with the reconstruction of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice; it is likely that between the two cities was born a tacit competition on creating the most beautiful and sumptuous place of worship. During the nineteenth century sculptures they have been replaced by copies and are now kept in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.

A few hundred meters away you arrive at the Duomo of Florence, the church of Santa Maria del Fiore, enriched from the Baptistery, Giotto's Tower and Brunelleschi's Dome. From the Duomo, along Via dei Calzaiuoli, you arrive at Piazza della Signoria where Palazzo Vecchio, seat of the Municipality of Florence, stands. Next to Palazzo Vecchio is the Uffizi Gallery, known all over the world for the works it contains inside. Continuing on you arrive on Ponte Vecchio with its shops and a little further on Palazzo Pitti. In short, the historic center of Florence contains in a few square kilometers a quantity of works of art to be left open-mouthed for days.

Galleria degli Uffizzi

The Uffizzi are a treasure trove of masterpieces from every century and a popular destination for art lovers from all over the world. From the Sala del Trecento where the works of Cimabue, Duccio di Buoninsegna and Giotto are found, everything is a crescendo of treasures passing from Botticelli to Leonardo da Vinci, from Perugino to Caravaggio. A single day to visit the whole gallery calmly would never be enough but every second spent inside the gallery is worth it.

Pisa

When it comes to Pisa is inevitably refer to his tower; but this impressive leaning tower is just one of the many monuments offers the lovely Tuscan city. The beautiful Piazza del Duomo collects, in a unique architectural complex in the world, not surprisingly called the Field of Miracles, the main religious monuments of the city: the Tower, the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Santo.Pisa Court, however, does not end in this square: just move a little to discover the artistic wonders that make it one of the most beautiful cities in Italy.

Ponte Vecchio a Firenze

The most beautiful bridge in Florence and one of the most photographed in the world, is not always a chic place. Although today are the goldsmiths' workshops to attract caravans of tourists, until 1565 were the shops of greengrocers and butchers to dominate the bridge. Later, when it was built the Vasari Corridor, goldsmiths and jewelers took the place of the previous. In 1565 Giorgio Vasari built for Cosimo I De 'Medici the Vasari Corridor to join Palazzo Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti. The corridor, about one kilometer long, starts from Palazzo Vecchio, through the Uffizi Gallery, and over the shops of Old Bridge and then continue to Palazzo Pitti.

The Pisa Tower

Pisa is known worldwide thanks to the Tower because of its characteristic slope, the Tower is the most famous monument in Piazza del Duomo. Built between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, the Tower hangs because the land sold already in the early stages of construction and has remained so since then. Although it may incutervi a feeling of fear, do not influence: the vertical axis that passes through its center of gravity falls into the cradle, and then less than any disasters never fall.

[Fine estate]
Eฬ€ stata una stagione diversa dalle altre, ma la nostra isola eฬ€ stata graziata. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Se vuoi venire...

Good to know

  1. Clothing Casual summer wear can be worn during the day any time of the year; but be sure to bring a jacket or sweater for cooler evenings from December to March.
  2. Water Shoes Bring them if you go to swim or snorkel. Some of the water can be rocky after you walk from the beach.
  3. Sundries For convenience and cost concerns, bring your own everyday health and beauty products with you.
  4. Port Regulation Be aware that often in port it's forbidden to take off the ship fruits, vegetables and unsealed food items for local agricolture concern.
  5. Currency The official currency is the Mexican Peso, but the U.S. dollar is widely accepted throughout the island.
  6. Credit Card concern Pay attention using credit cards in Cozumel. Here several episodes of cloning happened. Use cash as much as possible.
  7. Time Zone EST (Eastern Standard Time) UTC/GMT -5 hours. No DST changes during the year. Make sure to keep the ship's time on your clock to come back board on time. Be aware of automatic changes of your smartphones.

Terminal

Currently, the cruise port has three berths and can handle three large ships at a time. The extra mooring is available on other piers, giving priority landing for passenger transport ships. In total, the port can handle eight cruise ships simultaneously. The small ships dock just steps from the center. Large cruise ships dock at Livorno container terminal of the port. From there a shuttle bus service is provided. There are also taxis at the terminal. At the terminal, cruise passengers can purchase bus and train tickets to Florence and Pisa.

Remind

Transport

To move to Livorno from the port you can use public transport. Eventually, if you want to take part in excursions to the nearby cities of Pisa or Florence, it is recommended to book transfers directly on the ship or as soon as you get off at the port.
