The island of Gran Canaria is part of the archipelago of the Canary Islands, as the name would suggest. It is the third island by size and the second by population, which flows mainly into the city of Las Palmas which together with Santa Cruz de Tenerife is also the capital of the entire archipelago.

Gran Canaria is a territorially very different island: in the central part is Pico de Las Nieves, the highest mountain in Gran Canaria, reaching a height of 1949 meters above sea level, all around the coast as far as the eye can see, with more of 80 stretches of golden sand, the main attraction for those who choose the island as a holiday destination or even just passing through other shores.

With more than 500 years of history behind it, the capital, Las Palmas manages to combine modernity with the historical legacy that belongs to it. A few years after its birth it had already become a fundamental port for the expeditions of Christopher Columbus on his journey to the Americas. Besieged by pirates in the following centuries also due to its strategic and isolated position compared to the rest of Europe. In the nineteenth century then the decision to establish the free port regime significantly increased the importance of Las Palmas which soon became a commercial route followed by many ships of various origin.

Today it is the commercial and institutional hub of the island, a city that has been able to modernize over the years but which is perhaps not the main tourist destination in the region. It is certainly its gateway.

What to see & what to do

Beaches

Maspalomas

Maspalomas, in the south of the island, about 50 km from Las Palmas is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Europe. The always wonderful climate, the landscape that is divided between the palm trees, the dunes and the ocean make this place open to any type of tourist. The lighthouse that stands close to the beach bears witness to the tourist frequentation of the area and was declared a site of cultural interest in 2005. On the seafront you can find hotels, discos, restaurants, bars and shops with an enviable quality of service. Maspalomas can be reached easily both with a rental car for those who want to have greater freedom of movement and with public transport that guarantee the connection from the capital at any time of the year.

Playa de la Canteras

Playa de la Canteras for the inhabitants of Las Palmas is not just a simple beach, but a meeting place where they can walk, chat and take their children to play. A long expanse of sand washed by a calm sea also thanks to the "Barra" an imposing rocky system that acts as a natural barrier. It is also very popular with tourists passing through due to its proximity to the city center and embellished by a beautiful promenade full of bars, restaurants and shops selling typical products.

Puerto de Mogan

For those looking for something more distinctive than what can be found in Las Palmas and Maspalomas, they will no doubt be rewarded by visiting the small seaside town of Puerto de Mogan. A country that recalls the unmistakable Mediterranean style of Greece and Italy, a small village developed around its tourist port with small colored houses arranged along the whole overhead hill. In addition to the structural part of the place it must be said that it is also the main destination for those who love water sports and diving in crystal clear waters.

Park & Landmarks

Caldera de Bandama

The Caldera de Bandama is a site that is located about 20 minutes outside the center of the capital. Here you can breathe thousands of years of unspoiled nature. The Caldera is a crater of almost a thousand meters in diameter with a peak that exceeds 500 meters in height from which you can have a total view of the area below. The area is very popular with trekking enthusiasts thanks to a path of almost 2 km along which you pass ponds, caves used for the conservation of grain and a myriad of houses with hundreds of years of history behind them.

In Las Palmas in the Ciudad Jardin district you can find one of the most popular places for tourists: the Parque Doramas. An immense green area dotted with native plants and palm trees that frame the beautiful cascading fountains. Inside you can find play areas for children, the Pueblo Canario, a sort of open-air museum and even a real village, with its typical houses and colored turrets. The central part is used by street artists as a stage which cannot be denied a small stop of a few minutes.

The Dunas of Maspalomas

The Maspalomas Dunes are a fantastic Nature Reserve, in the southernmost part of the island, about 45 minutes drive from the marina. An expanse of dunes, covering over 400 hectares of land, surrounding a lagoon and a palm grove. The whole area represents a closed ecosystem, habitat of many species of fish, birds and insects.

Snorkelling

Puerto de Mogan

History & Culture

Aruca

The small town of Arucas is located about 12 km from Las Palmas, in its surroundings you can find banana plantations and expanses of cultivated fields. Located at the foot of a mountain, on which you can climb to get to the belvedere from which to enjoy a truly enviable panorama. Of particular historical interest in the town is the Gothic Cathedral built almost entirely of lava stone, which stands imposingly in the center of the main square. Inside, the walls have huge windows on which stories are told and from which the sunlight filters, making the interior a fairytale environment.

Rum Arehucas

This rum, distilled on the spot, is much loved by the inhabitants of Gran Canaria and exported all over the world. Produced with sugar cane grown directly on the island from which honey is obtained which gives this liqueur its unmistakable taste. In addition to trying it, there is the possibility of visiting the factory where it is produced with guided tours.

Triana and Vegueta District

In the capital Las Palmas, the most interesting districts to visit by taking a nice walk are those of Triana and Vegueta. They are the oldest neighborhoods. Vegueta highlights the medieval soul of the city, with its narrow alleys and noble palaces in architectural styles that follow one another from the 18th to the 20th century. Of great interest in the Plaza de San Antonio Abad we find the House of Christopher Columbus which is actually a museum dedicated to him. Triana, on the other hand, is the commercial soul of Las Palmas, especially from the moment it was made a pedestrian zone. For shopping it is certainly the most suitable place, ranging from small shops to those of big international fashion brands. Of significant importance in the area, you can visit the Perez Galdos Theater and the Church of San Francesci d'Assisi, rebuilt in 1700 after being completely destroyed by a pirate attack.

To dzięki Cesarowi Manrique Lanzarot dzisiaj wygląda i zachwyca.

  4. Port Regulation Be aware that often in port it's forbidden to take off the ship fruits, vegetables and unsealed food items for local agricolture concern.
  5. Currency The official currency is the Mexican Peso, but the U.S. dollar is widely accepted throughout the island.
  6. Credit Card concern Pay attention using credit cards in Cozumel. Here several episodes of cloning happened. Use cash as much as possible.
  7. Time Zone EST (Eastern Standard Time) UTC/GMT -5 hours. No DST changes during the year. Make sure to keep the ship's time on your clock to come back board on time. Be aware of automatic changes of your smartphones.
