Lanzarote is part of the archipelago of the Canary Islands and is the one located further east, the closest to the African continent. According to many, it is also the most beautiful island in the entire archipelago. Its beauty derives mostly from the spectacular volcanic eruptions that over the centuries have contributed to giving it this characteristic. In addition, the inspiration of Cesar Manrique, a Canarian artist who lived until the early 90s, has shaped this island and managed to make it truly unforgettable.

The territory of Lanzarote is almost half a protected area, it has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, and offers unique landscapes of its kind. On the island there are almost 30 still active volcanoes, beautiful mountains and beaches, lakes and salt marshes and there are also underground paths that you can visit and be amazed.

The choice of what to do on the island of Lanzarote will be very difficult given the attractions it offers.

What to see & what to do

Beaches

Charco de Los Clicos

Inside the Timanfaya National Park we find a spectacular lagoon inside a volcanic crater constantly filled by ocean currents through an underground tunnel. Its name, Charco de Los Clicos derives from the fact that on the bottom of the crater there are algae that dye the water a beautiful bright green and contrast strongly with the blue of the sky. The black volcanic sand finishes the picture making this place a real work of art.

Playa Papagayo

Playa Papagayo is one of those beaches that once you visit will leave their mark on your memory. Listed by experts in the ranking of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world, it is located on the Costa del Rubicon, south of Arrecife. A small patch of golden beach, framed in a volcanic rock hill and bathed by a crystalline sea ranging from turquoise to emerald green. It is really worth a visit.

Playa Reducto

The Reducto beach is a seaside oasis of artificial construction to allow tourists to find refreshment on the beach even a few meters from the capital. Made up of white sand and bathed by a crystalline sea, it slopes gently and allows even the smallest children to play and have fun in complete safety and tranquility.

Park & Landmarks

Cueva de los Verdes

On the north eastern side of the island of Lanzarote, about half an hour by car from the capital, you can find one of the most beautiful tourist attractions, Cueva de los Verdes. An abyssal cavity that was created as a result of volcanic upheavals dating back to about 5000 years ago. Cesar Manrique, with the important contribution of Jesus Soto, another famous artist, has transformed this cave into a place of wonder, managing to enhance the play of light that arrives from the outside thanks to the solidification of the lava layers. Guided tours allow you to visit the cave in total safety.

Jameos del Agua

Not far from Cueva de los Verdes we find another site of great tourist interest, Jameos del Agua. A complex of underground caves, three to be precise, into which the ocean has managed to enter, flowing into a salty lake of an intense blue color. Today we find a bar, a restaurant and a 600-seat auditorium all around the lake. Furthermore, Jameo del Agua is the natural habitat of the Blind Albino Crab for which a lot of respect must be given during the visit.

Jardin de Cactus

The Jardin de Cactus perfectly represents the interaction between art and nature that Cesar Manrique sought in all his works. About half an hour's drive north from the port of Arrecife is this spectacular work that enhances a plant, the cactus, which seems to be indigenous to the island enriched by thousands of other varieties from all over the world. Thanks to the Cactus, a flourishing activity of breeding of Cochineals was born on the island, small insects that live on these succulents, which allow the inhabitants of the island to obtain a red dye that is then marketed in large quantities and which has several uses. The Jardin de Cactus is definitely an unmissable stop for those who have the pleasure of visiting Lanzarote.

Parque National de Timanfaya

If in one way or another you have always liked to visit Mars, before you can actually do it, we recommend that you reach the Parque National de Timanfaya, on the southwest coast of Lanzarote. About 30 km from the center of Arrecife is this area, a reserve of 51 square km, born from the most tremendous volcanic explosion in the history of the island and which for 6 long years brought death and devastation, leaving only black earth and sparse vegetation . No public transport reaches the reserve so the best option will be to take a rental car.

Puerto del Carmen

The town of Puerto del Carmen is undoubtedly the most touristic area of the entire island. A myriad of small shops, bars and restaurants will welcome you in this nice village not far from some of the most popular beaches. Definitely well equipped areas that are worth a visit and even a relaxing bath.

Animal Encounter

Jameos del Agua

Not far from Cueva de los Verdes we find another site of great tourist interest, Jameos del Agua. A complex of underground caves, three to be precise, into which the ocean has managed to enter, flowing into a salty lake of an intense blue color. Today we find a bar, a restaurant and a 600-seat auditorium all around the lake. Furthermore, Jameo del Agua is the natural habitat of the Blind Albino Crab for which a lot of respect must be given during the visit.

History & Culture

Arrecife

Arrecife, the capital of the island of Lanzarote, has enjoyed this recognition for a relatively short time, to be exact since 1852, when it was decided, given the commercial importance that was growing dramatically in recent years, to pass the scepter from the old capital, Teguise. Arrecife is now home to almost half of the inhabitants of the whole island and that is why it boasts most of the commercial and social life. The city center is a very picturesque place, boasting an important historical heritage, various parks and a breathtaking promenade. A large number of shops and places to shop are concentrated in its streets. It is also the city that hosts the tourist port where the numerous cruise ships that pass by these parts dock.

Castillo de San Jose

The International Museum of Contemporary Art is located today where in the eighteenth century there was a military fortress built to limit the pirate raids that continually occurred on the island. The name of the property is Castillo of San Jose. Once the need for defense from pirates was exhausted, this castle was converted into a cultural place, specifically for contemporary art. Today it boasts works by some of the most famous artists of the 20th century, including Picasso, Mirò and Tapies. Part of the building is reserved for catering and it is undoubtedly a magnificent sight to eat with a view of the Lanzarote sea.

El Charco

El Charco is a saltwater lagoon that enters the city of Arrecife and restructured to make it what it is today by the artist Cesar Manrique. For many years it has been a fishing area while today it is a spectacular place, half of a large number of tourists who come to photograph this beautiful landscape. It is also fortunate to be close to the shopping and dining area.

Teguise

Teguise is the ancient capital of Lanzarote. It is not a purely tourist country but its nature is halfway between a Spanish city and a North African village. The best known thing in town is definitely the Sunday Market. An open-air market full of jewelery and handicraft stalls, street food stalls and other spaces reserved for street artists who want to perform.

Food & Drink

Gofio Escalado

Gofio Escalado is made by mixing Gofio with fish broth. Gofio is a product that is obtained thanks to the grinding of toasted cereals such as wheat, corn, barley, rye, rice and oats with the addition of legumes such as soy, broad beans and chickpeas. For some years it has obtained the IGP mark.

Mojos

Mojos are typical sauces based on olive oil, in two variants: the Green Mojo with coriander, garlic, salt and vinegar while the Red Mojo contains peppers, garlic, salt and paprika.

Papas Arrugadas

Papas Arrugadas are the most characteristic dish of the Canary Islands, despite being an appetizer or consumed only as an aperitif. The dish is prepared by boiling a particular variety of potatoes, grown directly on the islands, called Papa Bonita, without removing the peel, salted on the surface so as to give a nice crunchy and tasty crust. They are usually accompanied by Mojos.

To dzięki Cesarowi Manrique Lanzarot dzisiaj wygląda i zachwyca.

Dry season

Dry season

From December to April, mostly sunny and fresh. The best period to sail in Caribbean. Having a flat territory and being exposed to the trade winds, Aruba is always windy and with comfortable temperatures.

Wet season

Wet season

From May to November, warmer season with more frequent rains. From July till September Hurricanes are not usually a problem for Aruba, which remain out of their track.

Good to know

  1. Clothing Casual summer wear can be worn during the day any time of the year; but be sure to bring a jacket or sweater for cooler evenings from December to March.
  2. Water Shoes Bring them if you go to swim or snorkel. Some of the water can be rocky after you walk from the beach.
  3. Sundries For convenience and cost concerns, bring your own everyday health and beauty products with you.
  4. Port Regulation Be aware that often in port it's forbidden to take off the ship fruits, vegetables and unsealed food items for local agricolture concern.
  5. Currency The official currency is the Mexican Peso, but the U.S. dollar is widely accepted throughout the island.
  6. Credit Card concern Pay attention using credit cards in Cozumel. Here several episodes of cloning happened. Use cash as much as possible.
  7. Time Zone EST (Eastern Standard Time) UTC/GMT -5 hours. No DST changes during the year. Make sure to keep the ship's time on your clock to come back board on time. Be aware of automatic changes of your smartphones.

Terminal

The port of Arrecife has two docking points for cruise ships depending on their size. The first is Mielle de Los Marmole, more distant, about 4 km from the city center of Arrecife and connected by taxi or shuttle service. The second but no less important docking point is La Boca de Puerto Naos which is closer to the center, 1km away. Here too we find shuttle service or taxi.

Remind

Transport

Lanzarote, an island of small size, offers in particular 2 main means of getting around without wasting time. Bus lines cover almost every corner of the island and are very cheap. One of the few points not reached by buses is the Parque National de Timanfaya, for this reason, if you feel safer and free you can easily rent a car and get around the island without any problem.
