The nature ranges from beaches to mountains, its ancient history is linked to the exploits of Odysseus. Kefalonia is an ‘island of many facets, where the welcome has an authentic flavor and its wild spirit makes it a destination to be discovered. In recent years mass tourism has also had extensive access to Kefalonia as an island that until recently was still a bit ‘off the radar of the big resorts but still manages to keep its charm, not to be destroyed from the crowds, to be safe haven for species of animals now in serious danger of extinction in the Mediterranean. Covered by vegetation intoxicating perfumes, the colors of the sea make your visit unforgettable depth of experience and the warmth of its people, it is a goal that will make you want to come back more than once. The real pride of the island are its beaches, scattered on every side. Lovers of wild shores will have no problem finding almost secluded bays in which to spend days of total relaxation, while those who can not give up the comfort will have at their disposal many beaches with services of all kinds. What to see & what to do

Beaches

Antisamos

The Antisamos beach is near Sami. It is a long strip of white sand, surrounded lush Mediterranean vegetation, whose bright green ago by contrast with the turquoise sea. For Antisamos they were filmed several scenes of "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" the 2001 film starring Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz which traces the story of the massacre of Kefalonia. With this holliwoodiana production, the popularity of the beach is considerably increased, so that even in high season can be quite crowded.

Fiskardo

Some 40 kilometers from Argostoli and about twenty from Assos, Fiskardo is a must stop on a visit to Kefalonia. It is a small fishing village on the north coast of the island, miraculously survived the earthquake in 1953 that struck the archipelago of the Ionian. The circumstance has allowed the country to practically preserve intact its architectural features that, over time, proved to be a great tourist attraction. To see the harbor area where the yachts are moored both vacationers that fishing boats of the locals. On either side of the port, in addition, two small pebble beaches, surrounded by rich Mediterranean vegetation.

Myrtos Beach

Unmissable at sunset, Myrtos is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. It is a wonderful beach that has kept intact over the years its environmental features. The credit is due largely to its no easy accessibility. To reach it, in fact, you have to walk along a country lane about two kilometers in the small village of Divarata. The protected position, without forgetting the lush vegetation all around, has preserved this beach from the big numbers. Myrtos beach is about 40 minutes from the center of Argostoli.

Sami

Home to the international port, situated at the bottom of a scenically spectacular bay, Sami is a small town nestled between the hills and the sea, characterized for its modern and at the same time fascinating. From this strategic location it is convenient to leave for excursions in the rest of the island, but it deserves in any case a thorough tour starting with the comfort of the beach that divides the city center on one side and the seaside district of Karavomilos other.

Skala

Skala is one of the most advanced tourist resorts of Kefalonia, about an hour from Argostoli. The beach is well kept, with free strokes and other concessions, not to mention its own pine forest dell'arenile shoulders, where you can safely take refuge when the sun beats down too. Not far from town, within walking distance, there are also the ruins of a Roman villa of the III century. To see, the mosaic floors in the home that are kept in good condition in spite of antiquity.

Park & Landmarks

Assos

An hour's drive separates Argostoli Assos, a tiny village on the north western side, recognized as the place's picturesque island of Kefalonia. Assos, being on the coast, has always lived fishery income and, only in more recent years, this has been added the tourist economy. The country is a beautiful example of Mediterranean architecture and this is the reason his most fascinating. The other is the presence of a sixteenth-century fortress built by the Venetians with the function of sighting and defense. Today the fortress is not practically nothing apart from a few, however, spoils the view that one has from the ruin is unforgettable.

Drogarati Cave

Another site, always near Sami, to be seen is absolutely Drogarati Cave. Discovered nearly 300 years ago and visited in 1963, the cave is about 100 meters long and is divided into two rooms. The first room, smaller, houses an infinity of almost transparent stalactites, the other, called the "Apotheosis Room", is a real natural amphitheater. In the summer, many musical evenings are held in the "Apotheosis Room" which you can attend. A truly impressive experience.

Melissani Cave

A thirty kilometers from Argostoli, the Cave of Melissani is a wonder of nature must visit. Discovered in 1951, this cave has an underground lake, half salt and half sweet, because of an underground spring that mixes with sea water, as well as a number of stalactites and stalagmites. The tourist appeal dell'anfratto began, however, after the earthquake of 1953. The earthquake, in fact, he caused the collapse of the overlying turn, allowing sunlight to enter into the cavity creating spectacular reflections blue and turquoise. During the summer months you can visit the cave through guided boat tours that leave from Sami town.

Mount Enos

The largest of the Ionian Islands has a number of goals over a thousand meters, including Mount Enos which, with its 1628 meters above sea level is not only the largest mountain in the archipelago, but it is also one of the most impressive peaks of the whole Greece. Not surprisingly, the mountain, which is located in the south of the island, in 1962 was declared a National Park in Kefalonia. It is also why the extraordinary biodiversity of the fauna, including several species of migratory birds, turtles and even a large colony of horses living in the wild. The trails are well maintained and properly marked to allow hikers to easily reach the top.

History & Culture

Argostoli

Founded by the Venetians in the eighteenth century, Argostoli is the main center of Kefalonia, as well as its capital. Unfortunately its neo-classical architecture is little left because of the earthquake of 1953 when the city was practically razed to the ground. The reconstruction has changed the aspect that today presents a predominantly modern face. The social life is found mostly on the waterfront but there are other attractions that are worth visiting: the Archaeological and the Folklore Museum, the Church of St. Spyridon and St. Theodore Lighthouse. Being the docking terminal of cruise ships it is the starting point for the discovery of Kefalonia.

“Hey Google, Ocean Sounds” 🌊

This is a phrase we were saying every single night before bed to Jordan’s google home. It would play the soothing sounds of the waves and we’d fall asleep dreaming of the sea 😍

We’re so happy to be able to jump into the ocean again, head out on boat rides and actually sleep to the sounds of the REAL ocean 😴

▪ Kefalonia is an island in the Ionian Sea, west of mainland Greece. It's marked by sandy coves and dry rugged landscapes. Its capital, Argostoli, is built on a hillside overlooking a narrow harbor. Kefalonia's indented coastline is made up of limestone cliffs, bays, and short strips of white sand, like Myrtos Beach in the north. Many beaches are only accessible on foot or via narrow twisting roads.⁣⁣

Dry season

Dry season

From December to April, mostly sunny and fresh. The best period to sail in Caribbean. Having a flat territory and being exposed to the trade winds, Aruba is always windy and with comfortable temperatures.

87°F 70°F

Wet season

Wet season

From May to November, warmer season with more frequent rains. From July till September Hurricanes are not usually a problem for Aruba, which remain out of their track.

90°F 77°F

Good to know

  1. Clothing Casual summer wear can be worn during the day any time of the year; but be sure to bring a jacket or sweater for cooler evenings from December to March.
  2. Water Shoes Bring them if you go to swim or snorkel. Some of the water can be rocky after you walk from the beach.
  3. Sundries For convenience and cost concerns, bring your own everyday health and beauty products with you.
  4. Port Regulation Be aware that often in port it's forbidden to take off the ship fruits, vegetables and unsealed food items for local agricolture concern.
  5. Currency The official currency is the Mexican Peso, but the U.S. dollar is widely accepted throughout the island.
  6. Credit Card concern Pay attention using credit cards in Cozumel. Here several episodes of cloning happened. Use cash as much as possible.
  7. Time Zone EST (Eastern Standard Time) UTC/GMT -5 hours. No DST changes during the year. Make sure to keep the ship's time on your clock to come back board on time. Be aware of automatic changes of your smartphones.

Terminal

Most cruise ships to dock at the island of Kefalonia Argostoli, a port city on the west coast. In 2010, a new pier was built in Argostoli consisting of 3 islets. The islands are connected to the shore via a corridor and allow access to the docked cruise ships. All facilities needed for the cruise terminals are built on these islands. Among them is the terminal building and an outdoor theater – both located on the ground – just before the entrance of the access corridor. The new pier has only one berth. When the mooring line is busy, the other ship is anchored in the bay and its passengers are transported to the old port by the ship’s tender.

Remind

Transport

Kefalonia has a good network of buses that guarantee a couple of trips a day to the main locations, but often if you have little time available, it is difficult to keep up with the set times. To move around the island it is recommended to rent a car to have maximum freedom in travel.
