La Isla Lenta, Fuerteventura, is part of the Canary Islands archipelago. The second in size and the closest to the African continent from which it is only 97 km away. The capital of the island is Puerto del Rosario located on the east coast, and right in the capital there is the cruise port where cruise ships dock.

The territory of Fuerteventura, as well as for other islands of the archipelago, is mostly characterized by a desert setting shaped over the centuries by volcanic eruptions. The evident contrast between the desert and the ocean is one of the most special attractions. The beaches, more than 150 km of coastline, have a real peculiarity: in the south the sand is golden, in the areas adjacent to the volcanoes it is black and on the north side it is very white.

The coasts of Fuerteventura are also known throughout the world for the myriad of sporting activities that can be practiced. Windsurfing and Kitesurfing above all, we can also find many diving centers and even an 18-hole golf course.

Fuertventura is an ideal place for any type of traveler, demanding or not, a corner of paradise.

What to see & what to do

Beaches

Cofete

In the southern part of Fuerteventura, on the Jandia peninsula, about an hour's drive from the cruise port, there is what for many is the most beautiful beach on the island, Cofete. Isolated, with a virgin and pristine aspect, it makes you want to immerse yourself completely in nature and leave the costume directly in the backpack. Often very windy and with a persistent wave motion, it has the particularity that the water temperature is always around 20 degrees and this certainly makes you want to take a nice bath.

Grandes Playas

Grandes Playas, as you can understand from the name, is a very large beach with an expanse of fine white sand as well as being washed by a crystalline sea. Just a few hundred meters from the center of Corralejo.

La Concha

La Concha, unlike many other beaches on the island, has mostly calm waters. We are located a few hundred meters from El Cotillo, in the north west of Fuerteventura, about half an hour drive from the cruise terminal. It has few services for bathers but it is still possible to find where to take refreshment.

Sotavento

Sotavento beach is considered a windsurfing paradise. A fantastic white beach that stretches for kilometers, one of the most famous in the world among surfers. Behind a desert landscape and a mountainous frame. Sotavento has a truly unique landscape, it almost seems to be on the edge of the world.

Park & Landmarks

The Corralejo Dunes

The Corralejo dunes are a destination that will take you into an almost Martian dimension. Desert landscape in every direction that contrasts with the blue color of the sea. What you will see will bring you back to un-European and decidedly exotic environments. The sun beats relentlessly while the wind blows with great insistence. A visit absolutely worth planning, just under half an hour by car from the cruise terminal of Puerto del Rosario.

The Holy Mountain

Tindaya Mountain, revered since the pre-Hispanic population inhabited the island, has always been considered the "Holy Mountain". About 20 minutes by car from the port area, in the province of La Olivia is the village of Tindaya, not far away you can find this mountain, the only visible reference in the desert expanse that is Fuerteventura. Not far from Tindaya, a few kilometers north you can find Malpais de la Arena, another mountain, but this time we will be faced with the result of a volcanic eruption of several thousand years ago. A truly fascinating marvel of nature.

The Islet of Los Lobos

Once you have visited the Corralejo area, you can move to the pier and take a boat that will take you to the islet of Los Lobos. A small patch of land entirely of volcanic origin, some fishermen's houses, a restaurant and a suggestive cove where you can take a bath. A visit to the lighthouse is a must. The islet of Los Lobos has been declared a protected area as more than 150 species of plants and animals have their home here and can reproduce freely.

Animal Encounter

Oasis Park Fuerteventura

In the locality of La Lajita, just under an hour's drive from Puerto del Rosario towards the south of the island, there is a beautiful attraction for adults and children, the Oasis Park, a botanical garden and zoological park where you can interact with many varieties of animals. An interactive show will allow you to caress reptiles and amphibians, as well as small and very similar lemurs. In addition, the park is the only one in all the Canary Islands to include hippos and African elephants among its guests. For the more adventurous you can also go on a small camel safari and also meet the local wildlife. Fun guaranteed.

History & Culture

Antigua

From Puerto del Rosario, about half an hour by car driving south, you can find Antigua, a town of only 3000 inhabitants which however boasts fantastic attractions such as ancient windmills, salt pans and typical Canarian-style houses. The windmills are arranged in a row one after the other and show how the Canaries manage to exploit the trade winds, thanks to which the Canaries are the "islands of eternal spring".

Puerto del Rosario

Puerto del Rosario, the capital of Fuerteventura, recalls distant times, times when the colonists were the main architects of that time. At that time the name of the city was Puerto de las Cabras, and the port often hosted Spanish shipping ships passing through the Americas. Today most of the island's institutions and cultural and commercial life are concentrated here. In Puerto del Rosario there is, a few kilometers from the city center, the airport and right in the city center the port where both cruise ships and the various ferries that connect the other Canary islands dock. Even with regard to shopping, it is undoubtedly the best place to venture out to make your purchases, whether they are major brands or typical local products.

Food & Drink

Gofio Escalado

Gofio Escalado is made by mixing Gofio with fish broth. Gofio is a product that is obtained thanks to the grinding of toasted cereals such as wheat, corn, barley, rye, rice and oats with the addition of legumes such as soy, broad beans and chickpeas. For some years it has obtained the IGP mark.

Mojos

Mojos are typical sauces based on olive oil, in two variants: the Green Mojo with coriander, garlic, salt and vinegar while the Red Mojo contains peppers, garlic, salt and paprika.

Papas Arrugadas

Papas Arrugadas are the most characteristic dish of the Canary Islands, despite being an appetizer or consumed only as an aperitif. The dish is prepared by boiling a particular variety of potatoes, grown directly on the islands, called Papa Bonita, without removing the peel, salted on the surface so as to give a nice crunchy and tasty crust. They are usually accompanied by Mojos.

Good to know

  1. Clothing Casual summer wear can be worn during the day any time of the year; but be sure to bring a jacket or sweater for cooler evenings from December to March.
  2. Water Shoes Bring them if you go to swim or snorkel. Some of the water can be rocky after you walk from the beach.
  3. Sundries For convenience and cost concerns, bring your own everyday health and beauty products with you.
  4. Port Regulation Be aware that often in port it's forbidden to take off the ship fruits, vegetables and unsealed food items for local agricolture concern.
  5. Currency The official currency is the Mexican Peso, but the U.S. dollar is widely accepted throughout the island.
  6. Credit Card concern Pay attention using credit cards in Cozumel. Here several episodes of cloning happened. Use cash as much as possible.
  7. Time Zone EST (Eastern Standard Time) UTC/GMT -5 hours. No DST changes during the year. Make sure to keep the ship's time on your clock to come back board on time. Be aware of automatic changes of your smartphones.

Terminal

Cruise ships on the Canary island of Fuerteventura dock at Puerto del Rosario, a port city on the east coast. The harbor is surrounded by the city center, which means that most of the tourist areas and city attractions are within a short walk from the cruise terminal. Naviera Armas Ferries offers regular ferry service from Puerto del Rosario to Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas (Gran Canaria).
