Cagliari is the capital of the Sardinia region, an island that dominates the entire Mediterranean with its beauty and history.

Cagliari is a silent witness of all the civilizations that have passed through its management. Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Pisans, Spaniards and Piedmontese have influenced the history of Cagliari, a city suspended between land and sea, building architectural wonders each with its own characteristics. The fusion of all these civilizations is found in the churches, palaces and even in the language, all concentrated in a city that shows the signs of its long and turbulent history.

The wonders of Cagliari, however, do not stop at the architecture because it is rich in breathtaking nature and it is completely surrounded by it. The beaches and the sea, crystalline as in few other places in the world, alternate with lagoons and naturalistic oases, ponds and salt flats that have become over time the natural habitats for some of the most beautiful animal species in the world. The seven hills on which it is built and which from their peaks allow you to have a view of the landscape below that has no equal.

Visiting Cagliari will be an unforgettable experience that will remain etched forever in the memory.

History & Culture

Nora

Nora is an archaeological site about 35 minutes by car from Cagliari in the direction of Pula. It was originally a trading place founded by the Phoenician population and at one time it was also the Roman capital of the island. Today we only find the ancient ruins but it is very fascinating to visit the theater and the Roman baths.

San Pancrazio Tower and Elephant's Tower

The Tower of San Pancrazio and the Tower of the Elephants rise in the ancient Castello district, built by the Pisans in the years between 1305 and 1307. Erected as watch towers. The Tower of San Pancrazio protects the north entrance of the Castle while the Torre dell'Elefante protects the south entrance. Over the years it has had various uses, including that of prison.

Su Nuraxi at Barumini

The Su Nuraxi is the largest and most famous nuraghe of Sardinia. It is located in Barumini, about an hour's drive from Cagliari. This archaeological site is the only place in Sardinia listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you can find the great central tower with smaller towers that surround it. Even the walls and fortifications are clearly visible: it is the only nuraghe of Sardinia which was completely excavated.

The Castello District

The Castello district is the oldest in Cagliari. Being one of the historic districts, it brings together most of the attractions to visit in the city such as the Elephant Tower or the Tower of San Pancrazio, the Roman amphitheater or the botanical garden. In the past it was the residence of nobles and wealthy people from Cagliari. Over time, fortifications were built by the various populations who commanded Cagliari, making it the military, religious and civil headquarters of the city. Today it is very fascinating to walk the streets of the neighborhood along small and narrow streets and take advantage of the viewpoints to enjoy the view over the whole city.

The Sanctuary of Bonaria

The Sanctuary of Bonaria has a very fascinating history. Built as a gift to the Mercedari religious by Alfonso of Aragon in a short time it became the largest center of devotion to the Virgin Mary in the whole island. It is said that in 1370 a mysterious chest that ended up in the water from a Spanish sailing ship landed on the beach in the area. Several people tried to open it or even just lift it but in vain. Act in which the friars of the Mercede succeeded in carrying it up to the small church. Once the box was opened they found a statue of the Madonna holding the Child Jesus in her arms and a candle still lit in the other hand. From that moment she was venerated as a protector and in 1908 proclaimed patron saint of Sardinia.

Good to know

  1. Clothing Casual summer wear can be worn during the day any time of the year; but be sure to bring a jacket or sweater for cooler evenings from December to March.
  2. Water Shoes Bring them if you go to swim or snorkel. Some of the water can be rocky after you walk from the beach.
  3. Sundries For convenience and cost concerns, bring your own everyday health and beauty products with you.
  4. Port Regulation Be aware that often in port it's forbidden to take off the ship fruits, vegetables and unsealed food items for local agricolture concern.
  5. Currency The official currency is the Mexican Peso, but the U.S. dollar is widely accepted throughout the island.
  6. Credit Card concern Pay attention using credit cards in Cozumel. Here several episodes of cloning happened. Use cash as much as possible.
  7. Time Zone EST (Eastern Standard Time) UTC/GMT -5 hours. No DST changes during the year. Make sure to keep the ship's time on your clock to come back board on time. Be aware of automatic changes of your smartphones.

Terminal

The Cruise Terminal of Cagliari is located right near the city center, not far from the train station and the main bus stops. Inside the terminal you can find the tourist information office. There are also many shops that sell typical products and materials for every need. There are generally two piers where cruise ships dock: the Rinascita pier and the Ichnusa pier.

Remind

Transport

In Cagliari, if you want to visit the historic center, you can easily do it on foot without even the need to use public transport. Many areas are completely closed to traffic and therefore entirely dedicated to those who move on foot. It is recommended to use public transport, which reach areas both near and outside Cagliari, there is a wide choice of vehicles that also go to extra-urban areas.
