Thira, the capital of the island of Santorini, is generally the first place to visit as it is the gateway for tourists. The town is located about 260 meters above sea level. The short journey that separates it from the port is usually covered on foot or by donkey, a method used especially by families with children. Alternatively there is also a cable car. In summer it is one of the busiest places in Santorini with tourists who flock to the small streets of the center between shops, ice cream parlors, restaurants and night clubs. Of great interest in Thira is the Prehistoric Museum which preserves objects of everyday life and the remains of the fresco of the Blue Monkeys. In Thira there is also the Orthodox church of Agios Minas, recognizable thanks to its blue dome that stands out on the buildings that surround.
