The International Museum of Contemporary Art is located today where in the eighteenth century there was a military fortress built to limit the pirate raids that continually occurred on the island. The name of the property is Castillo of San Jose. Once the need for defense from pirates was exhausted, this castle was converted into a cultural place, specifically for contemporary art. Today it boasts works by some of the most famous artists of the 20th century, including Picasso, Mirò and Tapies. Part of the building is reserved for catering and it is undoubtedly a magnificent sight to eat with a view of the Lanzarote sea.
