Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Begoña

The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Begoña is a place of worship dedicated to Our Lady of Begoña, patron saint of Vizcaya and protector of sailors, to which the population of Bilbao has always been very religious, so consider this beautiful church as a sanctuary. The church, built in the early sixteenth century, is situated on one of the hills that surround Bilbao, on a hermitage where, according to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to the inhabitants of the city. The Basilica of Begoña today stands the imposing and majestic on a small square, in a quiet residential area of Bilbao that can be reached along the Calzadas de Mallona, an uphill road from the characteristic Plaza Miguel de Unamuno, in Casco Viejo, and which includes 311 steps.
